A scenario to discuss

During Overhead Door Safety, the door hesitates, travels crooked or reverses differently than usual but still opens. A delivery is waiting. What must be cleared, tested and taken out of service before anyone works or parks beneath it?

Before work starts

  • Keep people, ladders, vehicles and stored material out of the full door travel and pinch/crush area.
  • Inspect panels, tracks, rollers, brackets, cables/springs and the operator for damage, looseness or unusual movement.
  • Test the normal controls and required entrapment/safety devices before relying on the opening for traffic.
  • Do not adjust torsion/extension springs, cables or other stored-energy components unless the work is assigned to a qualified person using the correct procedure.
  • Establish how the door will be isolated/secured if inspection, jam clearing or service is required.

  • Review the task, work area and changing conditions with the crew before work begins.
  • Assign who controls access, equipment, temporary protection and final checks for the task.
  • Coordinate with nearby trades so one crew does not create an unexpected hazard for another.
  • Keep the work area orderly and correct hazards as they are found instead of carrying them into the next shift.
  • If the setup changes or the control for door movement, springs and pinch points is not working, stop the job and fix it before continuing.

Stop and reset the plan if...

  • The door binds, drops, jerks, travels crooked, reverses unexpectedly or makes a new/unusual sound.
  • A track, roller, panel, bracket, cable, spring, control or entrapment device is damaged or unreliable.
  • The door cannot be isolated and secured against movement before inspection, jam clearing or service.

  1. What is the condition of the tracks, rollers, cables/springs, brackets and door panels, and has anyone noticed binding or unusual movement?
  2. Where are the pinch/crush zones as the door travels, and how are people, ladders, vehicles and stored material kept clear of them?
  3. Do the controls, photo eyes/sensing edge or other safety devices stop or reverse the door as intended before we rely on them?
  4. If the door jams, drops, becomes crooked or needs adjustment, what energy-isolation/service method keeps anyone from working under an uncontrolled door?
  5. Has anyone seen an overhead door start binding, drifting or moving crooked before it failed? What was the first warning sign?

Make it real on the job

Cycle the door from a protected position, point out the travel and pinch zones, test the normal safety devices, and identify the isolation method before the opening is used.

Close the talk

Before the crew starts, everyone should be able to explain the hazard, point to the control being used today, and name the condition that would make the work stop.
