Response time, access, communication, weather conditions, accountability and the location of emergency equipment can decide whether a serious event stays controlled or gets worse.

A scenario to discuss

During Severe Weather & Lightning, the normal exit, access gate, phone/radio, shelter, or responder route becomes unavailable. Nothing has happened yet. What part of the emergency plan must be changed and communicated now?

Before work starts

  • Review the emergency action for this work area, including who calls, what number/system is used and who meets responders.
  • Walk the evacuation/shelter/assembly route and make sure exits/access are not blocked.
  • Locate first-aid/AED/emergency equipment and confirm communication works from the actual work area.
  • Monitor weather when outdoor or elevated work is planned.
  • Stop exposed work when lightning, wind or other conditions exceed the site’s safe-work criteria.

  • Assuming everyone knows the emergency plan without checking the actual route, contact method and responsibilities.

  • Weather, site layout, crew location or another condition changes the response plan without being communicated.
  • The crew cannot explain who calls for help, where responders enter, where workers assemble, or what immediate action applies.

Questions worth asking the crew

  1. If the emergency described by this topic happened right now, what is the first action and who makes the call for help?
  2. Where is the nearest usable emergency equipment, exit/shelter/assembly point, and can the crew reach it from the actual work area?
  3. What site detail must responders know to reach us quickly: gate, floor, room, access route, hazard, or contact person?
  4. What weather, access, staffing, or communication change would make the current emergency plan no longer workable?
  5. If we had an emergency in this exact work area on a bad day, what part of the response would be most likely to fail or cause delay?

Make it real on the job

Walk to the actual exit/shelter/emergency equipment and have a crew member explain how help would be called from this work area.

Close the talk

Before the crew starts, everyone should be able to explain the hazard, point to the control being used today, and name the condition that would make the work stop.
