Why this matters
Construction sites contain changing fuel loads and ignition sources. Prevention depends on housekeeping, storage and knowing where fire protection is located. Fire prevention depends on controlling fuel, ignition and the route a fire can take through a building or work area. Temporary conditions create unusual combinations of combustibles, charging equipment, hot work and impaired fire protection.
A scenario to discuss
The closest extinguisher or fire-protection route becomes blocked while Fire Prevention on the Jobsite is underway. The task is nearly complete. What has to be restored before the work continues?
Before work starts
- Identify fuel/combustibles and ignition sources and verify required separation/storage.
- Confirm extinguishers, alarms, fire watch and any impaired-system plan are in place.
- Inspect charging/fueling/hot equipment for damage, leaks or abnormal heating.
- Keep combustible waste and packaging away from ignition sources.
- Store flammable and combustible materials using approved methods and containers.
Common failure points
- Letting temporary combustibles accumulate near ignition sources.
- Impairing alarms/sprinklers or other protection without an approved temporary plan.
- Ignoring heat, odor, swelling, smoke or other early warning from batteries/equipment.
Safe work sequence / controls
- Keep combustible waste and packaging away from ignition sources.
- Store flammable and combustible materials using approved methods and containers.
- Maintain clear access to fire extinguishers, exits and emergency routes.
- Control smoking and open flames according to site rules.
- Report damaged electrical equipment, fuel leaks and hot surfaces that could start a fire.
Stop and reset the plan if...
- Required extinguishers, alarms, fire watch or protection systems are unavailable or impaired without an approved plan.
- Fuel/combustible storage or ignition sources cannot be separated as planned.
- Smoke, unusual heating, damaged battery/equipment or another sign of fire risk appears.
Questions worth asking the crew
- What fuel, combustible material, battery, enclosure, or path of fire spread exists around today's task?
- What extinguisher, alarm, fire watch, sprinkler/temporary protection, or emergency route must be available before we start?
- What ignition source or storage condition needs to be separated, shut down, or protected during the work?
- What early sign of heat, odor, smoke, swelling, leak, or damage means we stop, isolate the area, and respond?
- Has anyone found a blocked extinguisher, impaired protection or unexpected combustible after work started? What inspection would catch it sooner?

Show the closest extinguisher, combustible controls and any impaired alarm/sprinkler condition.
Close the talk
Before the crew starts, everyone should be able to explain the hazard, point to the control being used today, and name the condition that would make the work stop.
