Rise and run

Enter the total vertical rise. The calculator chooses enough equal risers to stay at or below the selected reference maximum.

Planning aid only. Stair rules vary by adopted code, occupancy, landings, nosings, headroom and local amendments. Verify the permit set and local requirements before cutting stringers.

Side-view sketch

A proportional planning sketch of the rise and run.

Virginia reference included

The 2021 Virginia Residential Code lists an 8 1/4-inch maximum riser and 9-inch minimum tread for residential stairs.

Uniformity still matters

A calculator can divide the rise evenly, but field conditions, finish flooring and landing elevations must be measured carefully.
